Clermont’s hopes of winning a historic league and cup double this season are to be put to the test as their Heineken Cup quarter-final clash with Montpellier draws ever nearer.
Fans of Heineken Cup betting are already heavily backing the French outfit to progress to the final of rugby’s illustrious European tournament yet there is still concern they may slip up in the league as we enter the final few rounds of fixtures.
With just three Top 14 games left, Clermont sit healthily in second place, two points behind Toulon and importantly 10 ahead of Stade Toulousain in third.
Seeing as they are guaranteed a semi-final berth into the Top 14 playoffs, many Betfair rugby pundits believe now is the time coach, Vern Cotter, should channel his resources into their Heineken Cup efforts.
Unfortunately for supporters, that decision may prove difficult against a Montpellier side with a lot to play for themselves this spring.
The 2011 Top 14 runners-up have had a very poor league campaign by their standards yet continue to vie for a top-six domestic finish. The Heineken Cup has to some extent made Fabien Galthié’s season look better than it actually has been and reaching the semi-finals would certainly dispel fans’ frustrations.
April’s last-eight clash in the Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin is therefore a huge game that is not as clear cut as these sides’ Top 14 standings suggest. Clermont need a victory to maintain their push for the double while Montpellier require a boost if they are to make the championship playoffs this spring.
