The disappointing news that fly-half Jonathan Sexton will miss Ireland’s RBS Six Nations clash with Scotland at Murrayfield will come as a real blow to head coach Declan Kidney.
Having started the championship as favourites in the Six Nations 2013 betting and opening so positively with a convincing win over last season’s Grand Slam winners Wales in Cardiff; the 12-6 defeat to England in their last outing at the Aviva Stadium has really brought the men in green back down to earth.
It was not only the disappointment of the defeat to the English in Dublin that will have haunted Kidney but also the fact No.10 Sexton was forced from the field with a hamstring injury will have kept him up at night.
The problem is believed to be a “grade two tear” in the Leinster star’s hamstring which has now ruled the playmaker out of the trip to Edinburgh on February 24.
Of course the Irish have the experienced Ronan O’Gara there to fill the void and the veteran fly-half is more than capable of pulling the strings for his side against the Scots and kicking the goals.
However the game plan for the Six Nations will have largely been focused around Sexton and with the 27-year-olds absence at Murrayfield, the Irish could soon find their campaign going down the pan, after such a promising start.
A defeat to the Scots, who looked strong in their 34-10 victory over Italy in the last round, would all but end Ireland’s chances of claiming the Six Nations crown this season, with England now Rugby Union Odds favourites and looking strong, while reigning champions Wales turning things round in their victory over the French last weekend.
