Leeds Carnegie’s new head coach James Lowes is happy with how his side are progressing ahead of the start of their Green King IPA Championship season and he hopes that their remaining pre-season fixtures will stand them in good stead as they aim to hit the ground running in their quest for a Premiership return.
Carnegie will face Sale Sharks on Saturday before taking on Doncaster a week later and Lowes is looking at these games to try out combinations and to give as many of his players as possible some game time.
"Everyone who is fit and available will feature in the two games,” Lowes said. “I am not interested in the result on Saturday at Sale, the game is about us having a look how the things we have been working on in training are translating into a game situation,” the former Great Britain Rugby League international said.
Having justified the rugby betting odds and been relegated from Rugby Union’s top flight in 2011 Carnegie have now consolidated their position in the Rugby Union’s second tier and are looking to return to the big time with their young squad. Lowes joined Carnegie from the Leeds Rhinos and has become accustomed to Rugby League success in recent years but he knows that he faces a huge challenge to transfer his knowledge over to Rugby Union.
Despite the change of code and the drop in level, however, Lowes has been pleased with what he has seen so far; “The players are in great shape and have been working extremely hard. They are all looking forward to the game and I think it will be a good exercise for us," the 43 year old said.
Carnegie finished in 4th place in the Championship last season but were defeated in the play offs by Newcastle Falcons. After two years back in the Championship now is the time for Carnegie to show what they are made of and, with a born winner like Lowes at the helm, fans who bet on rugby believe that they couldn’t be better placed for a successful season and a Premiership return next year.
