It's a great day today, fathers day! Showered with gratitude from my kids, and an excuse to go down to Auckland's waterfront and check how well the city is preparing for the coming onslaught of revellers.
I get the impession my daughters think that I like rugby... a book from each, both cartoon strips about rugby! Heck I don't mind, that keeps me in heaven.
We made it downtown aiming for brunch at one of the many new restaurants that have been specially set up. As we neared the area a special buzz was immediately obvious. Cars with national flags hanging out of them everywhere, queues of cars, lines of people walking the footpaths and all at 10:30 in the morning.
A little local knowledge helped secure a quick park, and good job too as the whole area was completely full. Walking got increasingly crowded as waves of people worked their way into the area, and we made to the restaurants around 11am. Bad luck though, because despite a big crowd of hungry people most remained shut - "We're actually a bar and don't open yet." was the excuse. C'mon Auckland, get act together and give some service.
So we continued to a more established part of the Viaduct basin and found a good looking spot. Again too bad the place hadn't been told a few people were turning up because the buffet was out of food more than in. A little patience paid off, and finally we got to nosh-up on some great tasting food.
We spent another hour cruising around and soaking up the atmosphere. Tonnes of families and dads were about enjoying this auspicious day. There was a major theme of support for the All Blacks but also plenty of international flavour. Auckland has done a reasonable job of cleaning up the viaduct and it's showing hints of being what it could be.
Despite the fact I could hardly move because of the throng of people, my family managed to take a massive amount of pictures and make it appear as though we were the only ones there! I was too busy looking after the littlest to get control of the lens. Anyway, a few are attached to give a little feel for what it's all about.
