As if things were not hard enough going into this year’s Six Nations for Wales. Now they have fresh injuries concerns to add to their woeful form.
Ryan Jones is now a serious doubt for their opener against the Irish on 2 February after dislocating a thumb. The versatile and highly talented Jones has been a mainstay of the current Grand Slam champions.
However, Wales are far from the formidable Six Nations Grand Slam winners of 2012.
Jones is now part of a whole host of players, including Luke Chateris, Rhys Priestland, Alun Wyn Jones, who won’t be lining up against Ireland for their opening clash and punters on Betfair are already doubting their chances.
It is amazing to think how far a side that had the chance to win the World Cup just 14 months ago have fallen. The recent injury to Jones will do them no help as coach Warren Gatland is fully focused on the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia. Interim boss Rob Howley has got some serious issues to deal with.
What seemed to be going right for Wales has suddenly gone horribly wrong and now they are a well and truly average side. As a small nation it is naturally hard to sustain a strong side consistently and the latest injury set backs will not help them one bit.
It is strange to concede it already but Wales could line up at the Millennium Stadium for their opening fixture of the Six Nations campaign as one of the weakest Grand Slam defending champions ever.
England, France, Ireland and maybe even Scotland are all in much healthier condition that the country of the Dragon and all have favourable rugby betting odds.
Funny things can happen in sport but it looks like 2013 will be a year to forget for Howley and his charges.
