USA Will Not be Star struck - Matterson 4 views 0 Comments 0 Images
11 November 2013 by Englandfan See all

USA Tomahawks coach Terry Matterson has promised that his side will not be star struck when they come up against Australia in the Quarter Finals of the Rugby League World Cup next weekend.

Despite losing their final group game 22-8 to Scotland, previous victories over the Cook Islands and Wales had already secured top spot in Group D for the Tomahawks and placed them in line to face Australia.

Having been Assistant Coach at the North Queensland Cowboys for the last two years, Matterson knows what the Kangaroos are capable of but despite this he is in relaxed mood ahead of the knockout stages.

"I have studied their players every week for the past two years with the Cowboys," the 46 year old said. "I don't need to go through their last three games. I have a fair idea what Cameron Smith can do,” he added, according to bet365's rugby league tips website.

Rugby League is still very much in its infancy in the USA, and Matterson’s achievement in leading his side to the Quarter Finals should not be underestimated, but he knows that it will be an uphill struggle from here and, for him, the rest of the World Cup is about performances not results.

"The way we have approached the three games, we don't talk about results. We just want a really good performance out of these guys next week,” the former Castleford Tigers Head Coach said, although his side will certainly not show the Australians too much respect; "Our guys will not be star struck," he added.

People placing rugby league bets should note that it is very difficult to see the USA advancing beyond the Quarter Final stages of the World Cup, but they have exceeded all expectations and whatever the result against Australia they will certainly be proud of the efforts. As for Cameron Smith and his side, nothing but a World Cup win will suffice and they will show no mercy against Matterson’s minnows.
