Harlequins captain Chris Robshaw hopes that playing a big role in his side’s assault on the Aviva Premiership will help him retain his place in the England side.
Robshaw has captained his country since Stuart Lancaster took over in 2012 but his role as skipper and his place in the number seven shirt has come under heavy scrutiny from rugby betting pundits over the last few months due to the form of a number of other contenders.
After missing out on a place on the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia, the 27-year-old was rested for England’s trip to Argentina as Lancaster looked to rest some of his key players after an extremely difficult season.
However in Robshaw’s absence, Tom Wood led the side to a series victory against Argentina while Matt Kvesic was excellent in the number seven shirt, with many people who bet on rugby suggesting the stocky Gloucester forward could be the answer to the openside position that’s been heavily debated since the retirement of the legendary Neil Back.
It means that the Quins skipper is now under huge pressure to retain his place in the national set-up but the England coach is a man who likes to pick on form and the former Millfield School pupil’s club side are known for starting quickly, meaning their skipper should be coming into form going into the Autumn internationals.
The 27-year-old guided his team to Aviva Premiership glory in 2011-12 but having missed out in the last four last term, the newly refreshed flanker is looking to lead from the front for both club and country.
"The season's end was deflating, what with being knocked out in the Premiership semi-finals, so I did make a point of getting away from rugby entirely," he said. "You need to be right on top of your game to be successful and you are always looking at ways to improve.
“There is real competition for places in England now and that's how you want it. I intend to fight for that shirt just like everyone else."
