New Australia coach Ewen McKenzie is looking to increase the strength in depth of his squad and he has promised to bring in new blood for the Rugby Championship.
Having joined up with the Wallabies earlier than expected from the Queensland Reds following his former side’s Super 15 play-off defeat to the Crusaders last weekend, McKenzie now has a few weeks to assess his options ahead of the Rugby Championship.
The extra time will come as a welcome relief to McKenzie and fans who bet on rugby, who know that he has inherited a side with a number of injury concerns; "Some players have been carrying injuries for a long time. The mind is always willing and the heart is willing, but the body has to be co-operating,” McKenzie said. “You have to pick players who are fit and raring to go,” he added, hinting that some big names may be left out if they are not fully fit.
Whilst injuries to the likes of Will Genia and James Horwill will certainly be playing on McKenzie’s mind he will try to use them as an opportunity to blood new talent and to increase the strength in depth of his squad.
Following the Wallabies 2-1 defeat to the British and Irish Lions, and the subsequent departure of Robbie Deans, this seems like a great opportunity to bring in some new faces.
"We're coming off a loss basically so we have to sit back and have a look," McKenzie said. "With respect to everyone out there it's good we review each position and the candidates," he added.
Ewen McKenzie has taken over the Australian reins with the Wallabies at a low ebb and news of his injury concerns will only shorten the side's odds in the rugby betting.
If McKenzie can inspire his team and unearth some hidden gems to create competition within the squad then they could certainly cause problems for South Africa and Argentina in the Rugby Championship, if not New Zealand, but if the Wallabies perform as they did against the Lions then it could be a miserable tournament for them.
