Defending champions Wales kick-started their Six Nations campaign with a 23-15 victory over Italy at the Millennium Stadium.

If successful this year, as the bet365 odds suggest they could be, Wales will become the first country in the history of the tournament to win it three years in a row.

Alex Cuthbert opened the scoring for the hosts with a try inside the opening three minutes when he crossed in the corner. The Welsh winger took advantage of Angelo Esposito’s error when the Italian debutant misjudged the bounce of the ball.

Tommaso Allan scored Italy’s first points of the game from a penalty. However, Leigh Halfpenny was able to stretch Wales’ lead with a successful kick of his own.

The real damage for Italy was done just before the break as they conceded their second try of the game. Jamie Roberts and Scott Williams exchanged passes before the latter touched down.

The visitors started the second half well and reduced their deficit with a try from Michele Campagnaro.

Unfortunately for Italy, Halfpenny was in good form for Wales and recorded his second successful penalty to break up the momentum.

Campagnaro did make it a brace of tries with ten minutes to go to keep his side in the tie but Halfpenny sealed the win with seven minutes to go with his third penalty.

Wales will take to the road in the second game in this year’s competition when they travel to Ireland. They will look to continue their unbeaten start on Saturday in Dublin.

The current champions secured the title in 2013 thanks to a 30-3 victory over England in the final round of fixtures, a result that surprised some fans in the bet365 forums. They won four out of their five games in which their only defeat came at the hands of Ireland in front of their home crowd.
